Comrade Sitaram Yechury, a towering figure in contemporary Indian politics, dedicated his life to the pursuit of socialism and justice. His steadfast commitment to these ideals, paired with his profound influence on political thought and practice, has left an indelible mark on Indian society.

From his early days as a student leader to his role as General Secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)), Yechury’s journey exemplifies a lifelong dedication to revolutionary ideals and the struggle for an equitable society. This article explores the significant phases of his life, his contributions to Indian politics, and the enduring legacy of his revolutionary spirit.

Early Encounters with Marxist Ideals Sitaram Yechury’s engagement with Marxist ideology began during his student years. In the early 1970s, while studying at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), he emerged as a dynamic voice within the Students Federation of India (SFI).

His influence was evident when he addressed a meeting of the SFI State Committee, leaving a lasting impression on many, including myself. Despite our inability to establish an SFI unit at IIT-Delhi, the connections forged through these early interactions were significant. Yechury’s clarity of thought, understanding of global student movements, and revolutionary zeal set him apart as a leader of great promise.

Rising Through the Ranks Yechury’s rise within the CPI(M) was rapid and remarkable. His leadership skills, combined with his ideological conviction, led to his election as All India President of SFI in 1984. By 1985, he was a member of the Central Committee of CPI(M), and his ascension continued as he joined the Central Secretariat in 1989 and became a Polit Bureau member in 1992.

This period marked a significant era for the Left movement in India, with Yechury playing a crucial role in shaping its direction amidst a politically turbulent landscape.

The Fight Against Fascist Hindutva Forces

As the 1990s progressed, India saw a rise in Hindutva forces, posing a serious threat to secular and democratic values. Comrade Yechury emerged as a staunch defender of these values, using his position to resist any compromise with imperialist and Hindutva ideologies.

His tenure as a Rajya Sabha member from 2005 onwards was characterized by his fearless opposition to these forces, earning him respect from peers across the political spectrum.

Editorial Influence and Tactical Shifts Beyond his parliamentary work, Yechury’s role as the editor of CPI(M)’s weekly, *People’s Democracy*, allowed him to shape the party’s ideological and tactical positions. His writings were instrumental in formulating responses to various political challenges.

However, by 2014, it became evident that the CPI(M) was struggling due to its historical mistakes, particularly in West Bengal and Tripura. Recognizing the need for strategic change, Yechury spearheaded efforts to alter the party’s stance on its relationship with Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

This shift was a testament to his strategic acumen and his commitment to adapting to evolving political realities.

The Formation of the INDIA Alliance

The rise of Narendra Modi and the BJP marked a period of increased political repression and authoritarianism. In response, Yechury dedicated himself to forming a broad coalition of Left and democratic forces.

His leadership in the formation of the INDIA alliance was a strategic masterstroke, demonstrating his ability to unite disparate groups and navigate complex political dynamics. His experience and skills, honed from predecessors like Harkishan Singh Surjit, were crucial in bridging gaps between various factions and crafting a cohesive opposition.

A Legacy of Accessibility and Idealism Despite his prominence, Yechury remained remarkably accessible and grounded. His idealism, which drove him to reject a more comfortable life for a path of political struggle, was a defining feature of his career. His commitment to an egalitarian society and his belief in the fundamental equality of all people shaped his actions and decisions throughout his life.

Whether addressing a small gathering or speaking in Parliament, Yechury’s demeanor reflected the same youthful idealism that characterized his early days at JNU.

Comrade Sitaram Yechury’s life and career embody the essence of steadfast revolutionary commitment. His influence on Indian politics, particularly in shaping the Left movement and resisting authoritarianism, will be remembered as a pivotal aspect of his legacy.

Through his strategic insights, fearless leadership, and unwavering dedication to socialist ideals, Yechury has left an enduring imprint on the political landscape of India. As we reflect on his contributions, it is clear that his legacy will continue to inspire future generations of activists, intellectuals, and political leaders.

His dedication to creating a just and equitable society remains a beacon of hope in the ongoing struggle for social justice. Red Salute to Comrade Sitaram Yechury! Your unwavering dedication to the cause of the people will never be forgotten.
